Create a life you are satisfied with.

We hear a lot these days about work life balance and the challenges of how to create it or if it is even possible. What I have come to realize is that if we can create  a life that we are satisfied with, it can naturally lead to a life that has a greater potential for balance.

I often work with clients to discover what the minimum conditions for satisfaction are in many different areas of their lives. This may mean completing a particular number of hours at work, completing a particular task each day or spending a particular amount of time with a family member or developing a hobby.

For me I have a minimum number of exercise sessions I want to have in my week to feel satisfied – if I achieve less I can feel disappointed. I have also come to realize that I need to have something in my day that allows me to feel that I have contributed or supported others in a way that can ease their journey through life. My consultations with clients and writing in my blog or sending out my Thought for the Week are some of the ways I can achieve this.

By setting an outcome for our ideal, letting go of all attachment to it, then  focusing our attention on what gives us satisfaction we can also avoid the pitfall of aiming for perfection and beating up on ourselves  when we fall short.

So, ask yourself “What conditions do I need in my life to feel satisfied?” You might find that your whole outlook on work / family/ personal balance changes and the pressure to achieve unrealistic or excessive expectations just drops away.
